The Houston area went to 2 area code overlay and 10 digit dialing a couple
years ago and has now added a third area code. It took a while to get used
to dialing the extra digits, but now it's second nature. Of course, speed
dialing makes it easier and has made us all lazy.

so we now dial 10 digits.... but the new 971 area code could easily have the
