I've seen this happen (every time?) on invent3k when I run the Perl test suite.
  Something happens where the test directories end up with rmdir and :PURGEDIR
refusing to purge them because the directories are supposedly in use.  It takes
a reboot to make the directories purgable.

I recommend that you open an HPRC call about your unpurgeable directory.
Despite opinions to the contrary on HP3000-L, there are still plenty of very
knowledgable MPE experts at the HPRC who are available to help.
