perfectly legal, I think, but you won't get a blessing from HP without a
license transfer, which is virtually impossible unless you have a very
specific very old original piece of paper with signatures.  of course that
piece of paper contains info HP already has on file, but that will do you no
good, you must have the piece of paper.

how badly do you want HP's blessing?  I don't think you need it, at least
not after 2006.  I wish someone from openmpe would read up on the IBM
consent decree and its application; my understanding is that to drop support
for the product, they HAVE to release EVERYTHING, but maybe not to the
entire world.
