Thanks for digging this up. It would be a major question if she had
actually said it.

So much for accurate reporting. I withdraw my remarks.

Subject: Re: [HP3000-L] Carly in the news !

After some more research, I found a video clip of the actual speech she
made at the CES, titled "Fiorina fends off merger skeptics." You can see
it for yourself at the following URL:

http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200-8412036.html

She most definitely and correctly says "Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard," so
it seems that either the BBC and/or CNET screwed up the quote, and the
other one simply copied the first screw up from the wire.

Bottom line, it seems, is that she did NOT mess up any founding fathers
names as my earlier research had indicated.

Many apologies.

I guess I have to be able to say "cheese," too! HA!

Ok, just one question:

Sorry, but who the hell is "David Hewlett and Walter Packard?" Could she
have possibly meant "Walter Hewlett and Dave Packard" or the original
founders "Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard?" I am now confused, because I
have no idea who was really in the "background" picture of the two men as
stated in the article.

I did some research and it seems that this statement is not a misquote,
since it's been quoted exactly the same by both CNET and the BBC.

Say cheese, I guess ...

HP boss comes out fighting
By BBC News Online's Alfred Hermida in Las Vegas
Hewlard-Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina has defended her troubled
merger plan with Compaq, using a demonstration of digital photography to
illustrate how the deal made strategic sense.
Addressing the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, US, she said the
$25bn merger was "compelling".
"This is all about building the future. There is no future in the status
quo," she said.
The merger is opposed by the founding families of Hewlard-Packard (HP),
who argue that buying Compaq would dilute the HP brand and leave it with a
large personal computer division.
Combined power
Carly Fiorina has kept a low-profile in recent weeks, but she used the
forum of the CES to go on the offensive.
Showing off how HP's digital cameras and printers worked together, Ms
Fiorina explained how the ambitious merger would harness the technology
portfolios of HP and Compaq.
"We have an ability to deliver solutions in a way that is unique and our
merger with Compaq will bolster all these abilities," she said.
"We are not just thinking of the camera, the printer, the computer or the
network. We are thinking about the whole system required to deliver the
experience," she stressed. "The power is in the combination."
Fight over legacy
The HP boss also sought to strengthen her position by reclaiming the
mantle of the company's founders,
"For most of us at HP, the images that inspire and move us most... are
images of David Hewlett and Walter Packard," she said against a background
showing a picture of the two men.
As she explained how change through mergers and acquisitions fit into HP's
corporate legacy, Ms Fiorina stressed how the company's founders had often
faced sceptics who had questioned their plans.
"In the days ahead, we're going to draw upon the same courage, the same
determination, the same aspiration that drove our founders,'' she said.
"To the sceptics who say it won't work, that it's not the HP way; I say
you don't know the people of the new HP," concluded Carly Fiorina.
