Another good trick for getting a weak disc drive to fail without causing harm
is to set the drive up where it gets electrical power but isn't connected to
anything.  Then let it run and every now and then, power it down and then
back up again.  A weak motor in the drive mech or a power supply in the
cabinet is much more likely to fail during a power off/on situation than when
it is always running.
