Here's a tidbit from O'Grady's PowerPage (a PowerBook-oriented web site),
which in turn quotes from the November 24th issue of the New York Times:

U.S. Robotics maintains a dial-up BBS that can diagnose a phone
line at no charge. Dial 1-888-877-9248, and enter "Line" when it
asks for a first name and "Test" when it requests a second name.
The system will perform tests and determine whether the user's
phone line can support 56-kilobit technology.

(Not having a modem handy, I could verify only that a modem-sounding device
answered.)
