One more note, somewhat significant, especially in this context. I wrote:

This is true for large values of "updated". The routine update provides a
definition with yesterday's date, and that does * not * detect it. I had to
manually download and run an executable that provides an update with today's
date. I realize that this is not unusual, but for combating some rather new
variant, it is required. The most current routinely available update is
inadequate for our immediate need, handling a known infection. I imagine
that this is roughly analogous to having to be seen by a doctor, and getting
a prescription for an antibiotic. It's not something we do every day; it's
for the known infection.
