     Hi Denys,

Well, it sounds like the 95 list has improved somewhat; I know the NT
list has. I agree 100% with your observation about this list; it is by
far the most civil of any I've been on.

I expect you're right about not wanting to insult people you know,
although there may be more to it than that. For instance, even though
     I've worked with HP/3000 only since 1979, I doubt that I've met a
handful of the people on this list (they don't let me out much). I
expect that other folks may be in the same boat.

On the other hand, I did inadvertantly start this seemingly endless
thread (by nominating you for a cube, or something like that) ...

Well the Windows 95 list is a bit, shall we say, zooish. It is definitely
nowhere near as civil as this list. Here we have no flame wars. We do
have violent disagreements, but no name calling. People stick to the
issues rather than sink to the personal stuff. On the 95 list, there are a
few people who could use some soap in their mouths, but they seem to get
called to attention quickly. It is an intense list, lots of stuff going
on.

If I may make a personal observation here. I was mentioning recently to
someone that one of the reasons this list is very civil is that a lot of
the people on this list meet at various events throughout the years. It is
one thing starting a name calling contest bravely hiding behind the
anonymity of e-mail. It is another to do the same when you know the people
and you will meet them at some event in the near future.

The other component is that the group of users who make up this list has
known each other for many, many years before the met and jousted on the
Internet.

A final observation about the 95 and NT list. Many people do not give
their names. I understand it is their right to do so, but somehow it irks
me to answer someone asking for help, who doesn't identify themselves. We
have had a few on this list, but they are indeed rare.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

     Hi Denys,

the last time I was on the Win95 list (it has been quite a while), it
was more trouble than it was worth (too many flame wars, etc). Is it
better about that kind of thing now?

     thanks,
     Bob
