Mike,
> I have a real stupid question. What is SAMBA?
Doesn't sound like a *stupid* question to me! Samba is a
freeware package created by Andrew Tridgell in Australia,
which comprises of server and client software that deals
with the SMB (server message block) protocol which is the
protocol used by Microsofts LanManager services.
Running the samba server (smbd) on an HP 3000 makes it
possible to "mount" server directories on the PC as just
another drive and then access the files from the PC.
It is similar to the HP Resouce Sharing product but has
the adavatange that it is (a) free and (b) uses the regular
MPE (HFS) file system instead of special "container files"
like Resource Sharing does. If setup properly you might use
Windows Write to view the file D:\SYS\PUB\HPSWINFO and in
fact view HPSWINFO.PUB.SYS from your 3000...
Hope this helps. Find more info at ftp://ftp.3k.com/POSIX/

PS: I'm doing this on my own, no "HP mission", just my own
(p)leisure time... so it is *not* a supported product.
