"I'll bet you were not even aware of the momentous change currently
taking place in Europe."

 Sorry, mis-spelled, it's Lyndon LaRouche -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyndon_LaRouche
                              --

Is it a momentous change? We'll see.

Did you know that earlier this year the UK legislature tried to pass an
Enabling Act (through the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill),
thereby grabbing supreme power to make, alter or amend ANY legislation
whatsoever simply by means of ministerial decree, without further need
of reference to parliament? This was outvoted by a small margin.

But we do have something called the Civil Contingencies Act, which, for
instance, allows a minister to declare a state of emergency in which
assets can be seized without compensation, courts may be set up,
assemblies may be banned, and people may be moved from, or held in,
particular areas, all on the belief that an emergency might be about to
occur. Only after seven days does Parliament get the chance to assess
the situation. If the minister is wrong, or has acted in bad faith, he
cannot be punished.

Compared with which, the firstborn-decimation clause in the new European
treaty is small potatoes, surely?

Please remember this thread started with Jerry looking for a new
cellphone.

There was no political venting, just a relevant observation of current
historical events. I'll bet you were not even aware of the momentous
change currently taking place in Europe. It certainly isn't being
discussed over here, or over there for that matter. :-)

Denys...
