I run my own HP3000/917LX at home.

192 meg memory. 40 gig disc space. 6.5 PP2 No private volumes, all
drives assigned to the sys vol set. I have no need for private volumes.

Full system backup to DDS-3 tape takes about an hour and same for the Vstore
after it. No problem.

Partial, nightly backups (backup everything accessed/modified since the full
sys backup) take about 10 minutes as does the Vstore. No problem.

So now, until I get a workable tape drive, this store-to-disk runs forever.
BIG problem. Took over TWO HOURS to do the partial, nightly backup. Took
over FIVE HOURS to do the full system backup last Friday night.

I see some things going on that are probably what is doing it in.

Each disc store file is getting backed up in the current night's backup
thus sucking up disc space I don't want it to.

So I changed the JCL to whack the previous night's Store disc backup file
after the current backup has completed.

So this disc file is growing exponentially every day. BIG problem.

My only solution is to go get a *workable* DDS-3 tape drive and forget
about this disc-to-disc "backup".

I have never been a fan of so-called disc-to-disc "backups" at all.

What happens if the system goes down and cannot be rebooted from LDEV1 ??

Oh ok, reload from my trusty CSLT tape. Oh no! Tape drive doesn't work!

So that is me royally screwed.

I want to thank everyone who replied to me offline. Your comments and
suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian Donaldson.
