I was in Israel in March at the time that the Israeli Defence Force moved
into Ramallah. I experienced the Passover bomb in Netanya and was close to
one of the supermarket bombs while staying in East Jerusalem.

Tourists are a rarity these days and attract a good deal of attention. As a
result I was able to talk to quite a few inhabitants from both sides.
Without exception, everyone I spoke to (be they Israeli or Palestinian) was
desperate (I use that word deliberately) for peace. One woman said they
would be happy to give the Palestinians the West Bank and Gaza in exchange
for peace.

Do those at the top listen to those on the ground?

Martin Mason
