U (undefined) records are rounded up to a multiple of sectors (256 bytes),
whereas V (variable) records are their exact length and can be blocked
together, since they have a 'length' field. Therefore U records will use
signioficantly more tape than V records. However, U records can be read
almost everywhere, not V records. Huh... life's made of choices and
compromises ...
