Hi, folks. Please consider the following an unofficial public service
message for your personal edification and amusement:

If you want to test your email and/or the listserv handling hp3000-l and/or
the SMTP mechanisms that may be in between, instead of sending a test
message to the whole mailing list plus all the NNTP servers carrying
comp.sys.hp.mpe plus all the other places that archive messages on this
forum, try sending an email to [log in to unmask] with a body that says
only "thanks" (no quotes). That will effectively ping the L-Soft listserv
software that handles hp3000-l and send a reply email back *only to you*,
thus saving all the rest of us from seeing the side effects of your test.

If you want to check on your subscription status via email, add a line that
says simply "query hp3000-l" or "query *" (without the quotes, BTW; the
asterisk is a wildcard for the query command) and you will get back your
subscription options by email. Of course, you could also check and modify
your subscription information via the web server at http://raven.utc.edu
plus read and post messages by that mechanism if you find your email not
working properly.

These commands and more are available by email in the quick reference card
available from the listserv robot by including another line in your message
that says "info refcard" (again, without the quotes).

Of course, if you don't get any reply from listserv in some reasonable time
period, then something in the email loop from your site to the listserv and
back may be failing. In such a case, I suggest you try to determine if
your end of the connection (your client and server) are working properly,
perhaps by trying to exchange email with someone else with whom you
regularly correspond.

"...bread and circuses..." :)
