I've been extremely happy with the HP Laserjet 3030.
It's laser, it's muli-function (print, fax, scan, copy) and it's BW
(non-color).
I've had it for 8 months and I love it.
The couple of times I've needed support on it, the help from HP has
been outstanding.
And the cost should suit your budget - perhaps closer to $400 than
$300, but that was 8 months ago.
