Unix environmental variables are usually set in the users .profile
file ( global ones in /.profile and some may be set in /etc/profile also )

I assume something like this (-L) is set up in a standard UNIX shop
too...otherwise everyone trying to do anything would most likely end up axe
murderers by the end of the first week.   :-)
