Hi all,
I have been catching up on my Digests and enjoyed reading the Oil Companies thread.
One thing that struck me, and no-one mentioned, when talking about building new
Oil Refineries etc....my question is Why?
Surely it would be better to plough the money into research into renewable energy
sources rather than build an unneeded and eventually obsolete structure?
Surely the more forward-thinking people realise that fossil fuels will be a thing
of the past once all the existing deposits have been exhausted and that now is
the time to promote cleaner, more enduring energy sources? Unless, of course, we
are talking about a refinery that can convert rape seed into combustible fuel,
for example.
I wasn't aware that the US had a moratorium on drilling new wells on its own
soil. Is this true? Is this so that the rest of the world can have their deposits
exhausted first and the US will still have their own reserves to use afterwards?
or am I being over-cynical?
It's a shame that the big oil companies have such a stranglehold on the US that
any alternatives to dirty, expensive, fossil fuels is quickly quashed.
When will sense return to the decision makers in the US?
I live in hope.
Cheers,
John Dunlop
