I've solved a similar problem on a different platform by creating
substitution tables. If the files are all going one way, pretty much any
substitution will work ( _ for space, &c). Where files will be going
bi-directionally, it will take a little more work to come up with
substitutions that will always (or mostly) work.

Do you imply modifications at source level ? If yes, that's a dead end for
me. I'm using the HP released version of Samba, shipped with 6.0. My
objective is to implement on my test system what I'm later going to
implement on customer sites. Therefore, alterations at source level are out
of the way ... Yeah, I don't want to maintain my own Samba for each of my
customers. And I want to be able to follow ALL HP released Samba/iX
patches.

But I definitely agree that substitutions are the key to solving filename
mapping issues. So, if anyone knows a way to tweak, er ... customize,
Samba/iX into doing its own filename mapping, then please let me know !!!

I found a nice discussion about substitutions on the Samba/iX website
(http://www.sambaix.com) but, unfortunately, it does not address the issue
of configuring substitutions on Samba/iX. That's why I assume alterations
at source level would be necessary.

Thanks in anticipation,

Christian
