Well, we have ignition!
To answer several questions first:
1. Yes I could ping from the HP3000 to the LaserJet
2. Yes I could telnet into the LaserJet into the HP3000
3. Tracert worked also
4. Nothing printed at the other end UNTIL...
I followed John "the man" Burke's suggestion to add the snmp_enabled=false
directive and Voila! It prints.

I would make sure snmp is turned off at the printer. If you can not do that,
or even if you can, then add the snmp_enabled=false directive to npconfig
for this printer. Then stopspool/startspool on the printer.
BTW, the netcontrol update... step was not needed.
