        I would tend to think the network card instead of the cabling or mau.  If I
remember correctly you can startup the network without anything even
connected to the NIC.  So, if the NIC was working and the cabling or mau had
a problem I would expect to be able to startup the network service, but not
be able to talk to anything.  In fact, I had a similar problem with a
failing transceiver.  The network started up fine but wouldn't talk to
anybody.
