At this time, unless you're a historian, it no longer matters what our
forefathers believed in. What matters is what we believe in today.

For example, today one could argue (rightfully or wrongfully) that
religion in the form of believing in a supreme deity is a concept one
of whose main consequences (however unintentional) is the "separation
of humans into enemy camps".
