one more thing about FTP performance, pay attention to your network
configuration.

I transfer some fairly big files every night 75 Megabytes, it takes
about 15 seconds to transfer. Then one-day, for no apparent reason the
same exact transfer took 5 hours. The problem was one of our network
techy made some minor network configuration changes. The port that the
HP3000 Nic. was plugged into had been changed to half duplex, yeap, that
was the only change, and 15 seconds turned into 5 hours!

i wish i knew more details about your situation (particularily what os
level, ftp version and number of gb's)....but will add these comments:

1) i believe a number of enhancements have been put into ftp recently.
please check raven's archives for postings from james hofmeister
regarding ftp. however, i think many of these enhancements have been
defect repairs and not necessarily performance enhancements. short
version is, you need to stay up-to-date with ftp.

2) imo, the practical limit for ftp'ing stuff off a 3000 in a timely
fashion is 2-4gb. beyond that (as was already mentioned) the
efficient
solution is dlt. of course with any luck at all (not), these systems
are a continent apart....

3) check into using file compression. of course it depends on what
you're sending.... you have compress(.hpbin.sys) available already.
i
believe you can get lzw off of jazz...? this might be a good solution
if you're just over 4gb and you have nice compressable data.

4) if by some miracle your 'other systems' are mpe, you will get
better
performance using dscopy, provided the files themselves don't make
dscopy choke. (are folks aware of this? that good ol' dscopy way out
performs ftp??) since dscopy is still cm code, it won't transfer hfs
files or files > 4gb. however with some planning (like renaming hfs
files into mpe name space) this might work.
