First, the documentation that comes with PostgreSQL is excellent: very
detailed, well-written, well-ogranized. I could wish for better
formatting, but that's about it. It may be all you need.
I did go out and get a book, however: Bruce Momjian's _PostgreSQL
Introduction and Concepts_
<http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0201703319/opt>. It's a companion
rather than a substitute for the included documentation; it includes
reference material in a compact form and has a number of simple but
useful programming examples. I found it well-matched to the task of
getting one over the hump of writing that first program, and it continues
to be useful as a somewhat more portable reference than the 3-inch binder
containing the distribution's documentation. (That's a 3-inch notebook
filled to capacity with duplex-printed documentation.)
