The Dept of Education came into being as the US Dept of Health Education & Welfare split in two to become
the Dept of Health and Human Services and the Dept of Education.

HEW was established in 1953. Even today, the federal budget for education is a small percentage compared to what the states spend.

The percentage is small but the impact is far and over reaching... The first list I provided was just the tip of the iceberg... A novel could be written about the blunders of the DOE.

From the DOE web site.

ED was created in 1980 by combining offices from several federal agencies. Its original directive remains its mission today — to ensure equal access to education and to promote educational excellence throughout the nation. ED's 4,500 employees and $71.5 billion budget

A billion here a billion there and pretty soon you are talking about a lot of money.

There are approx 300 million people in the US, for every billion spent that's about $3.33 for every man, woman and child. So the DOE is costing $238 dollars for every person in the US. It is costing me. for my family of five, $1,191 dollars.

Oh, and I have chosen to homeschool.
