HP to break itself, dividing into 2 companies

<http://3000newswire.blogs.com/3000_newswire/2014/10/hp-to-break-itself-dividing-into-2-companies.html>

It's becoming HP Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Enterprises, but shareholders are getting stock in both companies. It will take a full year to close the transaction, the company said.

And now to watch the ultimate spin-off: operating environments built by HP, versus those created by outside corporations. Windows will certainly play a role in HP Enterprise. But HP-UX, VMS, and NonStop are going into Enterprise.

Big, bold, risk-laden move. Can't wait to see what the markets say today about share price. Just a reaction of the blink of an eye, but interesting. It's up almost $2 a share as of 1 PM Eastern, a 5 percent lift.

PS. The sort of spinoff HP never wanted to make with the HP 3000 business, even when a group of investors approached management to take on MPE during 2002.
