Knowing nothing about Posix I've managed to get this little curiosity:

$ mknod /dev/ldev8 c 0 8

tar /dev/ldev8 /C2/DATA02/SNFSTUFF

Console then says ldev 7 not ready.

I say well whatever and dismount the tape from ldev 8 and mount on
ldev 7

Console then says ldev 8 not ready.

I say well whatever and mount a tape in ldev8

The terminal I'm running tar from says read error on /dev/ldev8 System
  file error.

I say a lot of things and after relaxing by cuffing about a few fellow
workers happen to glance in the machine room and there tar is
happily writing the file to tape.  on ldev7.

I guess I can live with that sort of nuttiness as I'll only have to do this
4-6 times, but it really leaves me wondering what the.....
