Hello Reji,

Re: Online Abort of Hung VT Sessions

I see no-one has replied to this message yet, so I will byte
(bite - like a fish or dog does) and stir up some activity!

It is possible, those who have requesting this functionality
are not aware of:
  1. nscontrol killsess = #s....
     - Note: This command is not documented in the 'help nscontrol'
     - This command is not documented in HP manuals that I could find.

This tool sends a TCP RESET to the VTSERVER TCP connection.

  2. showconn & abortcon
     - Note: Unsupported utilities located in NSRV0000.TELESUP and
delivered with 5.0 General Release NSS patch.

This tool sends a TCP RESET to any TCP connection specified by a
     process pin number.

  3. Connection Assurance Timeout default timeout is 40 minutes in the
case of a Client which powers down.

I have seen a few request in the past from customers who want a tool
which will in "all" cases go out and blow away a process (any process)
by it's pin... I (IMHO) do not advocate a tool of this nature for the
following reasons:
  a. It probably will not work in "all" cases, and then do you spend
your time fixing the tool or fixing the actual problem. Remember
when you are taking a multiple choice test in school and you see
the word "all", that is not the correct answer!

  b. One system abort as a result of using this tool, attempting to
free a hung session is one system abort too many.

  c. If people (customers and HP) are using a workaround to clear
hung sessions, what incentive does anyone (including HP) have in
fixing the root problems of hung sessions.

My recommendation (IMHO) to deal with Hung Sessions has 'allways' been:
  1. Can the session be removed with "supported" commands ? "ABORTJOB"
     and "NSCONTROL KILLSESS".
  2. Install the Current General Release fixes applicable to similar
     problems with this product.
  3. Work with the appopriate HP Support Enity to trouble shoot and
resolve the actual problem if it persists after steps #1 and #2.

Opp's, I forgot to specify the *FLAME OFF* flag, but I am sure it is
not necessary, I am amoung friends... I hope everyone finds my input
here constructive and thought provoking and that we will be able to
give Reji Jacob the input he is looking for.

Regards,
