Besides Gavin's demonstration, any Canadian could tell you it's a fake
because southern Ontario is fully ablaze in the photo while it was
reportedly very dark and very quiet for anyone who was there (I missed it
all since I was at HP World).

And here's the proof:

After opening the picture in Photoshop and stretching the brightness and
contrast we can see where the perpetrator simply airbrushed in pure black
(something you almost never get in images of a photographic origin).  The
"black" level of the retouched area is significantly different than the
level for other "dark" areas such as the ocean.
