I was writing a long message but decided to scrap it.  It was getting too
technical and too non-HP3000 related.  Here is the short version.

In the future, I would:

1- Decide on a standard PC (500 MHz PIII, 128 MB RAM, 14GB+ HDD, CD or DVD.)
 This will last 2-3 years easily. Select an office machine, not a home machine.
 Stay with the model in the future, increasing the CPU speed and the HDD.
2- Decide on a single OS (Windows 2000 Pro would be my suggestion.)
3- Decide on a single office suite.
4- Decide whether to image the drive or go with the factory loaded OS.  If you
image, do not forget to get a SID walker.
5- Lock or seal the cases.
6- Do not give users administrator capability on their machines.
7- Enact an edict banning unauthorized software loads.  These are company
machines, not personal machines.
8- Force the users to store their files on the servers (HP3000 (Samba) or NT
Servers). For backup purposes.
9- As you roll in these new machines, roll out the old ones, and then setup a
schedule where you upgrade every 2-3 years, not all at once, but in waves,
maybe 50 every year.

To answer your questions...

Mainly Windows 9x but some NT as servers.  We even have about 15 Macs in the
design department.  The hardware is whatever the flavor of the day was when
we bought it.  We don't image the disks.  When my hard drive died, they had
to do a complete install on everything, OS, applications, etc.  We are using
MS Office as the standard suite.  However we don't keep users from
installing what they want.  Hardware is accessible to anyone with a
screwdriver.

By your comment, the 3 people we have now are probably not enough...
