For my day job I am a developer for a large ISV who does Windows and Java
software, among other things. (I got hooked on theHP3000 at a previous
job.) I am starting to mull over the idea of going after Microsoft dev
certification, since I do Win32 stuff. I used to think that this cert thang
was silly. In the mid 90's there were stories about "paper CNEs", and in
the 1998-2001 timeframe those stories were replaced with stories about MCSEs
who only knew how to say "restart Windows." So, it is easy to get biased
against the certs after hearing stories like that. However, after I read
this article it changed my mind:

(Note: this blog is written by a Microsoft employee so make of it what you
will.) After reading this and browsing some of the course descriptions, I
do agree with the author that the Microsoft dev certs on the whole force you
to have a well-rounded understanding of the development landscape on
Windows--keeping in mind that the landscape morphs every few years. (COM
begat Windows DNA, which begat .NET....)

As for Java certification... I'm not familiar at all with the java
programs. Do they have a developer-level track, or do the tracks seem to be
aimed at consultants or architects?

HTH,
