Thanks for your kind words regarding Adager's efforts, Steve. It's,
indeed, my pleasure to do these things.

I would respectfully disagree with you, though, regarding "HP has never
been very good at marketing (compared to the other major computer
companies)."

I have a great deal of respect for HP's marketing. Witness what they have
done for HP-UX. If and when they set their mind to do a good job, they do
it. The sad fact, though, is that this hasn't happened regarding our
trilogy: HP3000, MPE/iX, IMAGE/SQL. My opinion (perhaps biased and totally
wrong, but at least reflecting the opinions of thousands of other HP3000
users I have contacted) is that the good folks at CSY have been under siege
from "top" HP management to treat the HP3000 like Cinderella: Relegate her
to the kitchen and don't, under any circumstances, allow her to go to the
Royal Ball, where her beauty and charm might (heaven forbid) be noticed by
the Prince.

In a previous paper, "1993: The Year of the Pies," I specifically mentioned
"HP's chief baker, Wim Roelandts." Now that he has gone to greener
pastures (at least according to his opinion), perhaps HP can review this
whole attitude towards the HP3000 and its enormous potential, if a little
attention is paid to its technical evolution (sine qua non) and promotion.

By the way, I have received a deluge of e-mail messages, faxes, and phone
calls regarding the wonderful article in InfoWorld, January 29, 1996, under
"Enterprise Computing / Management," called "Intelligent Electronics learns
the pitfalls of new technology: 1995 InfoWorld 100 winner opts to upgrade
old system instead of moving to client/server." [Not that client/server is
bad, mind you; it's that the HP3000 solution is better and CAN evolve into
client/server.]

This is a great article, of course. But it still falls short of my goal:
It's, after all, an article in a magazine for computer geeks (ok: for the
MANAGERS of computer geeks). This is a good NECESSARY start, but it's not
SUFFICIENT. What we need is to have this kind of coverage in the magazines
that "top" managers read: Golf Magazine, The Wall Stree Journal, Fortune,
Forbes, the funnies on the Sunday paper, and so on, ..., you get the
picture :-)

Does anybody on this list have a journalist/cartoonist
boyfriend/girlfriend? Pillow talk works wonders!
