We have logged a variation of this on our to do list (send the file to a
temporary name and rename it once the initial PUT has been successful).

As one of my colleague pointed out (or was it me) problem with
confirmation files is that different external systems require different
ways of being told there's a file waiting to be processed. These
differing requirements are best dealt with by the individual
applications rather than our generic FTP subroutine called by the
applications.

Tony,

You could have the sending machine create/send a trigger (zero sized
file with same name plus extension) after it has finished sending the
datafile. Then on the receiving machine you only pickup the datafile if
the associated trigger file is there.

Several of our systems use this method and have done so for
years-and-years without any problems.

I'm going to try somone else's suggestion to avoid mixed MPE and HFS
syntax - apparently there are known problems in this area. I'll be a
while changing the program and report back next week.

In the meantime, thanks for the suggestions.

Tony,

Based on some testing on my system, I concluded that the 'exclusive
violation' is occurring on the 'destination' system:

Remote system type is MPE/iX.
ftp> put Z ZZ
200 PORT command ok.
150 File: ZZ opened; data connection will be opened 200 PORT command ok.

150 File: ZZ;REC=-256,1,V,ASCII;DISC=10000,8 opened; data connection
will be opened
552 File accessed exclusively. (FTPERR 45) Data Transfer Request Failed.
(FTPERR 13)

...

If the 'violation' was on the 'source' system then the error would be:
ftp> put ZZ ZZZ
The file could not be opened because the file is being stored, or is
opened in a way that does not allow additional write access. (FILE OPEN
ERROR
-456)

Paul Christidis
