Would the Oracle Transparent Gateway let you read an Oracle db on NT
from the 3K? Is there an ODBC client for the 3K? Is it obvious that I am
making wild guesses? Could you go low tech, and do a batch load of data
from NT to the 3K each night, or do you need to be more 'on-line' than
that?

For the record, Prentice Hall has published a series titled:
Internetworking with TCP/IP. A co-worker remembers reading it when it
was one volume, about the time I was taking Senior English. I have
Volume III: Client-Server Programming and Applications, which is in its
second edition.

Of course, the ORA books are well-regarded, although I think that when I
looked, I was looking for broad coverage, and they were more specific
than I was ready for, but visit http://www.ora.com for their books (and
the online stores such as Amazon and SoftPro. et al). My own experience
with TCP/IP for Dummies has been personally disappointing. Maybe I
should conclude that I'm no dummy and be happy about it. But I only
found one chapter that addressed my interests. YMMV.

I have found a useful approach to read the first chapter of any book,
and to expect the rest of the book to be similar. If the author loses me
in the first chapter, I don't expect to understand the others, and if
the author tells me little in the first chapter, I will look for a
chapter that should be more informative, and see if it is.

Opinions are mine.
