But, Jon, the problem is that the new HASS disk technology appears
*NOT* to adequately protect your data in the event of a powerfail
unless you shell out additional bucks for a proprietary UPS to
"gracefully" crash your system (SA 5300).  We just spent $57K for a UPS
for our data center, and, while it would probably allow us to bring the
system down in the event of a power outage, we're not a
24-hour-attended shop.  At least I could count on the Cascade arrays
and XM to help assure data integrity if power went down at 3:00am.

But think about the functionality -- the HP3000 provides a lot of
features designed to ensure your data integrity, like powerfail
recovery, transaction management, etc.  Much of the HP3000's overall
reliability comes from MPE's ability to manage its disks.  Are you
willing to sacrifice some of these features in order to use "off the
shelf" disks?
