The WINS service is already available on the 3000 via Samba/iX. I use it
here at EDIT as my primary WINS server and it works fine. DNS is also
available via Bind/IX ported by Mark Bixby. DHCP is not available, but
there are DHCP servers available for many Un*X systems. Although I've
not made up my mind yet on whether DHCP on the 3000 would be a
substantial product, there is no reason to discount it in favor of an
NT system when the other pieces of the puzzle are already there (or
could be).

So DHCP, without some form of WINS on the HP 3000, is not very useful.
However, things change. With Windows 2000, WINS goes away and is
completely replaced by DNS. DNS on Windows 2000 will be able to keep track
of leases.
So maybe the 3000 can do the same thing, which is to offer DNS with the
ability to keep track of dynamically leased addresses.
