At the European Conference in Finland back in June, Nick Earle of HP was asked
when the HP3000 would be obsoleted. His answer was that this would be determined
by the competition. It is now clear that HP are letting IBM determine when the
the demise of the 3000 will take place.

>WHAT THE HELL IS HP SAYING HERE? It seems like they are

This has been a major cause of confusion in the marketplace. The message from HP
is not what they say but what they don't say. Again at the European Conference,
Nick Earle said that the new INTEL chip would have HP-UX binary compatability
and NT. The important message is that MPE was not mentioned. However, we were in
Cupertino at HP shortly after the HP/INTEL announcement and it was stated at the
time that MPE would be binary compatible on the new chip. HP staff we spoke to
were excited with this commitment to the HP3000 customer base.

>Ought to be an interesting Management Roundtable at HPWorld.
>I certainly will be there - as I'm sure that many other of you as
>well. I read this stuff, and it makes my blood boil.

This is a crunch time for HP3000 customers to determine if there is a future for
the HP3000 beyond the year 2000 or whether the cliff edge is racing towards us.
