<<I'm scratching my head a bit on this one. If I understand this
correctly, you had an Express 3 tape set (Powerpatch + SUBSYS), and
additional SUBSYS tape containing applications not on the Express 3 set,
and the Linkeditor patch. If that's right, I'd think the correct
(effecient) order would have been:

   o Linkeditor patch
   o Add-on SUBSYS
   o Express 3 Powerpatch & SUBSYS

Of course, your way should work, but involves a couple more
installations. And I can understand that you might have been confused,
because our installation directions aren't clear when the situation is as
complicated as yours (multiple patch tapes and multiple SUBSYS tapes) --
does this sort of thing happen
often?>>

Since I'm the one who actually did this dance, I'll jump in:
1) The Response Center specifically said that the Express 3 LinkEdit
patch must *not* be installed on Express 2. Whether or not that would
work is unknown, but it wasn't worth the additional time to try it.
2) So, Express 3 had to be installed first.
3) Then, before *any* other patches can be installed, the LinkEdit patch
must be installed. Again, this is according to the RC. It seems that the
LinkEdit shipped in Express 3 is bad, and HP knew it at the time, but
chose to ship E3 anyway due to the tremendous pressure from sites wanting
to install their new 4GB disk drives, which are only supported on E3.
However, it also appears that installing any patches with the E3 linker
will cause significant problems; HP has instructions out that basically
say "if you installed any patches with the E3 linker, you're screwed;
call the RC for help on bailing yourself out".

The end result is as Ken mentioned:
1) Express 3 PowerPatch (AUTOINST option 1) - SLT, UPDATE
2) LinkEdit patch - no SLT
3) AUTOINST again, with option 2 for PowerPatch and Subsys - SLT, UPDATE

So it's two SLT/UPDATEs instead of one. Fortunately, on this machine
(959KS/200), it only takes 3.5 minutes to make an SLT, and an entire
create SLT/shut down/UPDATE/START NORECOVERY cycle only takes about 15
minutes. The previous box took longer than that just to create the SLT.
