Hello Friends:

He also said he heard an HP ISV realizing "HP wasn't in business to
make us money. They were in business to make [HP] money."

This is a point that customers and ISVs ought to care about.

HP making money, and it's ISVs making money, are not as separate as
Duane seems to suggest. The last time I checked, HP was in
partnership with such ISVs. For the 3000, it was a serious
partnership -- in HP's 3000 revenue model, HP expected these ISVs to
sell four of every five HP 3000s shipped in North America. The
reseller-based sales model -- so much in vogue at the new HPQ --
looks like it demands that such ISVs make money.

Or am I missing something here? How did HP's expect the 3000 ISVs
might fail at making money, but HP still succeeds?

As Duane says, it is unreasonable to expect a business partner like
HP to solve your problems. It's not unreasonable to expect a partner
to *help you,* however. Apparently, many ISVs learned that HP's level
of help on the 3000 wasn't going to make a difference, or ensure
success. A partner has some level of concern about your success. The
ultimate responsibility is up to the ISV or customer, of course.

So there may be a lesson in here somewhere, about ISVs and business
partners expecting HP's help in the markets it will continue to
pursue: HP-UX, Windows NT, Linux. ISVs should do their homework to
learn about that level of HP's help, before shifting their 3000
partnerships to other HP platforms. This looks to be another place
where preaching migration off the 3000 platform could cost HP some
partnerships. IBM, for one, is working to attract ISVs. One can hope
HP's help for its other platforms will be more effective.
