Craig,
I think it will only mirror like-size to like-size so you would need to
pull both drives in a mirrored pair, which of course won't work. You'll
be much better off doing the store/restore, especially considering that
these are old devices and the more you mess with them physically the
greater the likelihood of a problem.

I have a Mod20 that is populated with 16 * 4GB hard drives in mirror
format (8 Luns).
I need to upgrade the drives to 9GB drives (and use the 9GB capacity).
Is it possible to do that with out down time and a restore? i.e. could
I remove and replace one drive at a time?
