IIRC, someone wrote a version of a chat program that used an undocumented
feature of intrinsic GENMESSAGE to send messages whether the session was
busy or not.  I also want to say that it would remove the function keys and
put the message there, much like you see when you watch your system boot.
It was pretty cool and probably dates back to the mid '80s as well.
