If you're sticking with the 3000, I would look at ProEDI.  If not consider
Glenn's resource.  If it's a one off project, awk (available on MPE, *nix
and windows) is made to read records (segments) and fields (elements).  You
just set the record and field separators and the values are available in an
array.
