OK, I'm getting feedback from some that a Windows box is required, and
will require either a dedicated fiber connection or a fiber switch.

I know I have a k-class 9000 in Belgium running a VA7100, and I
distinctly remember the disk guy configufing the VA directly from the
UX box without a dedicated fiber connection using a character-based
utility. Is something that simple not available on the MPE side?

Mark,

You certainly do NOT need a switch at all, that is the beauty of the VA7410.  It has "dual-head" controllers, i.e. each controller has two connections.

One connection goes to the HP3k, from both controllers.

Then the CommandView workstation can connect directly to the VA (either side), via a fibre connection.

You can configure the VA through the serial port, however, if you are supporting it in a different country, you will want commandview.

A small hp-ux workstation with a fibre card, is under $800 easily.

Or you can use windows, your call.

I do have some VA's that have a PC attached to the serial port.  While it works, and I don't have any issues, a newbie would prefer the GUI that Windows or HP-UX Xterm has.
