Whilst you did not say to which system this backup device would be
connected, I suspect you mean an HP 3000. I take it that you are
talking about a non-PCI architecture machine. If such is the case, the
only real alternative is a DLT7000 or 8000. Using the same DLT-IV media
that you now use, you should be able to get close to 70GB on one tape
(DLT7000) or 80GB (DLT-8000). This will double what you currently get
with a DLT4000 (40GB).

The figures I am using are the marketing figures, depicting a 2:1
compression ratio. With Image databases, I have found these figures to
be reliable and even conservative.

If your DLT4000 is connected using an SE-SCSI, you will have to install
a HVD-SCSI (FWSCSI) controller on your 3000 in order to connect a 7000
or 8000. These drives will be found in the used market.

If you have a PCI architecture machine (a or N class), you can also use
an LTO Ultrium tape drive that can give you up to 200GB per tape. This
will require MPE 7.5 or 7.0 with patches and you had better be using
something other than TurboSTORE or just forget it.

If you are talking about something other than a 3000, then the choice
comes down to LTO Ultrium or SDLT. I have had lots of positive
experiences with Ultrium. There is also Ultrium 2, with greater speed
and more capacity.

All those devices are LVD-SCSI connected.

Subject: [HP3000-L] Backup Media Recommendations

Hi Listers,

We've hit the limit of being able to back up our network on to one DLT
4000
tape. I'm interested if any of you have recommendations for good choices
for
expanded capacity. We're not interested in an autoloader, but would like
something that has at least two to three times the capacity of the DLT
IV.
Backwards read compatibility is not a big deal, but backing up to a
single
tape (or other media) is highly desired. Is SDLT better than LTO, or is
there some other technology any of you have had a good experience with?

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience and recommendations.
