What model of HP3000?
I experienced the exact same problem with a customer a few years back who
had their 957 CPU board replaced.
The replaced board did not contain a numeric co-processor - which was an
optional add-on for that CPU.
They were a Powerhouse installation and that software degrades very rapidly
without a numeric co-processor.
Once it was discovered, a proper board replacement (which included the
numeric co-pro) solved the problem.
You may want to check if that is the case.
