Thanks, I did know about the port usage and that is one reason I haven't
changed to samba yet.

My problem is with the data on my old backup tapes.

I don't have another 3k to restore the backups to, and will resource sharing
run under mpe 6.0, 7.0,8.0??

That's why I think I need to write the renaming program to get at an old
backup in the future.

Thanks for the interest.

Because Resource Sharing and Samba/iX use the same ports (137 and 139), it's
impossible to have both running at the same time, unless you had two
HP3000's on the same network.

I would say, however, that if you have a Windows machine (it can be Win 9x
or NT), it is possible to use Explorer to copy these files (using a mapped
drive under Resource Sharing) to this Windows machine. This of course,
assumes adequate disk space for these files on the target machine.

Once these files are copied, delete the Resource Sharing directories, stop
Resource Sharing. Create the HFS directories you desire on the 3000, start
Samba/iX.

Map a drive from the client under Samba/iX, and use Explorer again, to copy
the files back to the 3000 under Samba/iX.

Reclaim the disk space on the Windows machine after a successful copy back
to the 3000 by deleting those directories (or keep them around - just in
case)...

As for converting the VDROOT - there's really no reason to have to try and
pick that apart, again, using Resource Sharing to copy the files off the
3000, to a Windows NT Server, Workstation, or Windows 9x Workstation, then
copy them back under Samba/iX, should do the trick. Just make sure that
Resource Sharing is never running while Samba/iX is running.

Joe
