Many thanks to all that responded to my problems over the past weeks.
Every message, public and private, was VERY helpful.
 
Just a quick recap:
 
1) FCOPY didn't work at all, the data on the tape from the UNIX system
would not be read into a workable record format.  I finally had to ask
that the tape be made using the "tar" utility.  This WAS read by the
POSIX shell "tar" utility.  The file that came out was also able to be
read by the original application written to read the 9-track tapes (with
a file equation, of course).
 
2) I received a message from Bob Walker who told me of a bug in the ODBC
driver supplied in the HPPCAPI.PUB.SYS files.  Once this was corrected, I
was able to read my databases.
