For MPE/iX 4.0, HP offers NS/3000 which will allow you to
connect PC's running a suitable client (like WRQ's Reflections
or Minisoft's terminal emulator) to connect up to the 3000
as a virtual terminal. If you can wait until you upgrade to
5.0, HP has bundled their portion into FOS, so there is no
additional product to order on the host side. You didn't
mention what OS the PC's were on, but the above solutions
require some version of Windows (from WFW 3.11 up) since they
rely on a TCP/IP stack (which BTW, for the Reflections product
you need a particular DLL from WRQ which I believe you must
obtain separately). You can get a DOS based solution from HP
by ordering their NS/ARPA client product (the actual name
escapes me at the moment), and this will allow a very similar
type of virtual terminal connection from say DOS based Reflections
(without the need for the above mentioned DLL).

The Windows based solution works for most people, and in fact,
you can even access the 3000 over the Internet this way if
you allow it. I'd avoid the DOS based if possible since the HP
client software was pricey and very fickle. The non-routable
protocol HP mentioned, was probably in regards to the DTC traffic,
not VT traffic.

Subject: Requesting help routing terminal connections to HP

We have an HP 3000 running version 4 of MPE. This system
supports approximately 150 users accross our WAN on two LANs. On each
LAN we have multiple subnets. On various subnets there are users on PCs
who are accessing the HP3000 using a DTC for direct/hardwired terminal
connections or they are using telnet. Since there are limited DTC
connections available and a maximum of 32 concurrent telnet sessions
allowed and since so many users constantly complain that they can't get
a connection, we would prefer to use virtual terminal sessions. From
what I've been told though, MPE doesn't support a routable virtual
terminal session protocol, so we will have to bridge all of our subnets
for us to start using virtual terminals. This will negatively impact our
network in a big way, so I'm asking this newsgroup for help.

Is there some way to accomplish setting up virtual terminal
sessions with a routable protocol to the HP3000 running version 4 of
MPE? We will be upgrading to version 5 of MPE in a few weeks, but I've
been told by our HP support people that there is no help there. If you
can help us out, contact me either directly or via this newsgroup.
