Hi Ragu,
MP3 encoding is a compressed format of a digital
audio file. It is the result of using software that
utilizes a compression algorithm to convert a digital
audio file of the format ".wav" (usually 16bit,
44.1khz, stereo).
A regular music CD track is quite large due to the
high rate of sampling in which the audio is recorded.
This combined with the fact that you can't just
click-n-drag an audio track off the CD is where MP3
encoding and "ripping" (what you called copying) or
DAE (Digital Audio Extraction) come in.
Basically, when you "rip" a track from a CD you create
a .wav file of the track. Then you run your MP3 encoding
software against the audio file to get a compressed (generally
12:1 for CD quality) MP3 file.
There is a HUGE amount of encoding/decoding and ripping
software available. Some software will rip and encode in one
step. Some software requires 2. All encoding software
is not the same, there will be some quality loss, so I
suggest trying a few different kinds and testing the audio
quality.
Say, that wasn't a bit too much information was it ? ;-)
