I'm afraid this does a pretty good job of summing up too much of today's
software development, for both applications and operating systems.

Many people seem to feel that there's not enough time to do things right (or
even time to stop and try to figure out what "right" is), so everything is
done in a seat-of-the-pants style, with the knowledge that the machines are
getting faster (so that you can out-run your mistakes) and changing fast
enough (so that your mistakes will be dead before they catch up to you) that
it just doesn't matter any more.
