I believe people are annoyed that Microsoft sat quietly by as FAT became the
de-facto standard for all removable media devices (digital cameras, etc.)
and now has said something like, "ha, ha, you all owe us royalties on every
device you've ever manufactured".

The patents on LZW expired, so AFAIK the battle is over.
